February 20, 2016: San Guerado, CR

February 20, 2016
SAN JOSE, CR
A small group of Charleston friends including Ann Truesdale, Hollace & Jim Boswell, and our guide, Diego Quesada, met at San Jose airport to begin our weeklong journey with Diego to see some great Costa Rica Birds.  We traveled in a comfortable van, and as we left the city we saw our first birds. Great-tailed Grackles, Rock Pigeons, White-winged Doves, and Crimson-fronted Parakeets appeared along the way.

Leaving the city behind we headed to the highlands where a Highland Timarou appeared in the middle of the road causing cars to stop. It was a surprise finding that got our week of birding off to a great start.

Miram's Restaurant
Arriving at Savarge Valley as the sun sank behind the mountains and a full moon rose just below the crest of the hills we were overwhelmed by the numbers of birds all around the restaurant and the feeders.  This was a good sign of the birding to come. Trying to get some photos of the birds was very challenging as the light faded quickly. 4 hummingbird species appeared in duplicates at the feeders along with other life birds.

This red-tailed squirrel is eating rice in Costa Rica fashion.  The birds ate the rice, too!

Night came as a full moon rose over Miriam's Restaurant and 2 enormous flocks of Barred Parakeets flew across the mountains to roost.
